The perfect little project to learn overlay mosaic crochet — and protect your morning coffee too.
The Mosaic Squares Coaster is quick, satisfying, and oh-so-clever. With its graphic geometric design and built-in fringe finish, this little mug rug proves that mosaic crochet is easier than it looks — and a whole lot more fun than it sounds.
What You'll Make
A small flat coaster or mug rug worked in overlay mosaic crochet, featuring a bold repeating squares design in two contrasting colors. The yarn tails are tied off along the sides to create a natural fringe edging, giving this piece a textured, handcrafted finish that's as functional as it is pretty. Make one for your desk, a set for your kitchen, or a stack of them as a quick handmade gift.

Intermediate
Confident beginners are welcome if they're comfortable with basic crochet stitches and ready to follow a chart. Helpful Notes
- Pattern is worked from right to left on the right side only — no turning required.
- Colors alternate every row; yarn is fastened off at the end of each row (yarn tails become the fringe — no weaving in needed!).
- Every row begins and ends with a border single crochet through both loops.
- The pattern has a 12-stitch repeat — easy to scale up for a larger mug rug or table runner.
- The pattern is also available to read for free on the ad-supported Juniper & Oakes website. This ad-free PDF provides a cleaner, more convenient reading experience.
