The Mosaic 4-Patch Granny Square blends overlay mosaic crochet with the classic granny stitch to create a pattern that's both eye-catching and fun to make. If you enjoy mixing techniques and trying something a little different, I think you're going to have a lot of fun with this square.
What You’ll Make
This 12-inch square This mosaic granny square begins with four miniature squares, created with overlay mosaic crochet in the round, from the center out. This technique is so much easier than you may think and I've provided photos and video tutorials to help you along! Each mosaic crochet center is then framed with rounds of the classic granny stitch. Finally, you’ll seam the four squares together to create one larger square, much like a traditional four-patch quilt block.
This is a beginner-friendly project and a wonderful opportunity to play with different color schemes. Give each mini square its own personality or keep things more coordinated for a clean, modern look. This unique granny square is also a perfect intro to overlay mosaic crochet.
The square is part of Mosaic Grannies Collection, a year-long blanket CAL with 12 squares in total. You can make it as part of that blanket, your own blanket design, or use in other projects like pillows, table runners, or wall hangings.

- Each smaller square begins with eight rounds of mosaic crochet, followed by two rounds of traditional granny square stitches.
- If you tend to have loose tension when you crochet, you may need to go down a hook size or choose a light worsted weight yarn to make this an 12" square.
- Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each corner, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
- The 12″ square consists of four smaller squares seamed together – known as a four-patch in quilting.
- The free mosaic crochet chart is available to view for free on the ad-supported Juniper & Oakes website. This ad-free PDF also provides written instructions, as well as a more convenient, annoyance-free way of reading the pattern.
